Stuxnet

Stuxnet is a computer worm discovered in June 2010, which supposedly has been created by the USA and Israel. Up to date, it is the only clear illustration of an act of digital war. Initially, the worm was configured to sabotage the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz (Iran) – the programme forced a change in the centrifuge’s rotor speed, alternately raising and lowering the speed, until the constant distortions eventually destroyed the centrifuge. It first spread in the company’s network by using infected USB flash drives, from where it updated itself to other computers via peer-to-peer and consequently spread worldwide via the internet. In the end, the malware reproduced and infected hundreds of thousands of computers. According to reports it compromised international industrial facilities and interfered with their operations. Security expert Eugene Kaspersky confirmed that the worm also infected a Russian nuclear power plant and the space station. Up do date, the inherent complexity and efficiency makes Stuxnet worldwide unique.
