Botnet

A botnet is a collective of remotely operated malware, which communicates with similar programmes in order to perform certain tasks. This programme exploits a website’s vulnerabilities, luring the user into making a download or gets installed automatically by opening email attachments – the installation remains undetected. The botmaster is able to compromise the user’s computer, gain access to the system and launch his coordinated attack on thousands of other computers. Unbeknownst to the user, the infected group of computers (so-called “zombies”) can be controlled and misused by the perpetrator remotely. Assuming the zombie is connected to the attacker’s command-and-control-computer via internet, the attacks can range from mundane undetected spam dispatch to DDoS attacks.
